10 Signs of Poor Digestive Health – What You Can Do

Digestive Health is very important for general well-being since external substances gain access to the entire body through the intestines.  The old saying, “You are what you eat,” is so true.  The modern American diet highly processed foods, fast food, high calorie, high amounts of sugars, high

acidity

and low nutritional value diets is the direct cause of the majority of poor digestion and many illnesses.  See our recent posting on Candida Overgrowth – 25 Signs You May Have It.  As a result primarily of poor diet, digestive health problems lead to the development of symptoms in numerous body systems.

According to the US National Institute of Health’s most recent statistics, in 2010 over 48.3 million Americans were diagnosed with some form of Digestive Health Disorder in that year alone.

Signs of Trouble

So that you can either (1) pull yourself out of being or (2) keep yourself from being one of those statistics, pay attention to the signs your body is trying to tell you.  Digestive Health problems can exhibit many symptom.  Here are some to watch for:

  1. Abdominal pain
  2. Asthma
  3. Bleeding
  4. Fatigue
  5. Food allergies
  6. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms like bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn and flatulence or abdominal gas
  7. Nausea and vomiting
  8. Skin conditions like eczema
  9. Swallowing problems
  10. Weight gain and weight loss

Don’t Guess.  Test for Digestive Health Problems

Thermography or thermal imaging can be used to evaluate digestive health since this medical procedure creates images that show areas of inflammation inside the intestines. These thermal scans can help diagnose food allergies and other digestive health problems.

Treatment for Digestive Health Problems

The treatment for digestive health problems usually includes a treatment plan that is personalized according to each patient’s symptoms and co-existing conditions. This treatment plan can include the following:

1. Probiotic and Digestive Enzyme supplements

Probiotic supplements improve gut health by restoring normal levels of the good gut bacteria. We are proud distributors for several highly purified premium Digestive Flora and Digestive Enzyme formulations. Digestive enzymes aid in the chemical breakdown of food into smaller, absorbable components so they can be readily absorbed and put into the bloodstream. In addition to supporting your overall (cellular) health and nutrition, these formulations prevent cramping, flatulence, belching, heartburn, and acid reflux. Digestive enzymes also regulate bowel movements, which helps to avoid both constipation and diarrhea. Beyond all this, Digestive Flora preps will advantage nutrition on a cellular level, plus boost metabolism.

2. Eating fermented foods for better digestion process

Eating traditional fermented foods helps increase levels of good bacteria in the intestines. Sauerkraut, kefir (fermented milk), natto (fermented soy), Kombucha, lassi (traditional Indian yogurt) and kimchi are some good examples. These fermented foods should be consumed on a regular basis since they also act as chelators and can remove toxins from the body.

3. Consuming or Taking Glutamine to Restore Intestine Health

Glutamine is very important for the repair and regeneration of the intestines. This nutrient can be obtained from eating foods like meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. Vegans can obtain their glutamine from beans, beetroots and spinach. Glutamine can also be consumed as a supplement after consulting your healthcare provider.

4. Drinking Water

Drinking around 8 glasses of water each day can improve a person’s general health and their digestive health. This water should be pure water which is not highly chlorinated.  Without installing a whole house water purification system, you can potentially do what I did and install a 3 phase reverse osmosis filter system that fits under the kitchen sink with a sink top mounted faucet.  It has a storage container that supplies on demand and can fill a couple cooking pots easily.  Ours was purchased at our local big box home improvement center and installed in an hour or two.

The consumption of water should begin with squeezing a lemon into a glass and drinking it before breakfast to kick start the digestive system.

Eat Healthy While Working Munch On Veggies and Fruit Eating Real Whole Raw Food for Health Vitality and Wellness Natural Medicine Center Lakeland Central Florida

Cut fresh veggies and have ready to snack on all day while you work. Drink ginger & lemon tea adding turmeric for pain and inflamation reduction.

Peppermint, ginger and fennel herbal teas can also be consumed to heal the digestive system and increase a person’s daily water intake. Ginger tea is especially beneficial since it stimulates the production of digestive enzymes. It also relaxes the smooth muscles of the intestines and reduces cramps and gas.

I enjoy slicing fresh ginger into thin sheets, slicing around 1/4th to 1/2 a fresh lemon also into thin sheets adding them to a tall mug.  I pour kettle hot water and dash in some Turmeric powered spice for its many benefits including anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and pain relieving.  I typically get a huge amount of fresh ginger for $2 and 4 – 6 fresh lemons also for around $2 weekly on our shopping trips to the Auburndale Flea Market’s fantastic produce section.

5. Eat Raw Vegetables and Fruit

You cannot be your optimal health unless you are eating with your health in mind.  Start by adding fresh cut veggies – ANYTHING you like to baggies and take to work to munch on ALL DAY.  This will keep you full and satisfied.  Eat Your Veggies and Fruit Eating Real Whole Raw Food for Health Vitality and Wellness Natural Medicine Center Lakeland Central FloridaTry without any dipping sauces since those add sugars that aren’t needed.  Vary it up with color, texture and flavors as well.  For me carrots, celery and all colors of bell peppers are staples.  I then depending on what I buy at the Lakeland Downtown Saturday Curb Market or the Auburndale Flea Market Produce area, I might have, cucumber, radishes, orange (many types), grapefruit, kiwi, broccoli, cauliflower, fresh berries, pear and more.  Your body needs the whole real food nutrients, fiber and alkalizing benefits of raw fresh veggies and fruits.

5. Eating “liver foods”

Eating foods which enhance the health of the liver also improves the function of the entire digestive system. These foods include dandelion, milk thistle, beet roots and carrots.  Did you know that the entire dandelion plant is edible and good for you?  Organic is best but so long as it’s not treated with any pesticides you could have a salad waiting for you in your own yard.  Dandelion is available as some local grocers and occasionally at the Lakeland Downtown Saturday Curb Market.  Often people will turn to supplements for dandelion and milk thistle consumption.

6. Stress management

Stress can wreak havoc in the digestive system and aggravate many of the symptoms associated with poor digestive health. As a result, it should be managed effectively by practicing relaxation techniques like meditation and abdominal breathing regularly.

What you consume is all the raw materials your complex body has to function with.  It’s predominantly

water, so ensuring it gets the cleanest and most water it can is vital to whole body function.  Further the food you consume DEFINES YOUR HEALTH.  Make choices to incorporate good foods and over time see the desire for bad food disappear or are those special occasion side tracks.

You CAN BE Healthy.  You Deserve It.

Candida Overgrowth – 25 Signs You May Have It

Candida Overgrowth can go undetected for a long time. Most people infected with candida are unaware of the yeast infection and they look very healthy on the outside. However when Candida population increases, it is able to penetrate the bloodstream through the walls of the intestines and cause a condition known as leaky gut syndrome.

Candida Overgrowth Symptoms Can Include:

  1. Abdominal pain
  2. Allergies
  3. Anxiety
  4. Autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis and multiple sclerosis
  5. Bloating and belching

  11. Endometriosis
  12. Fatigue
  13. Flatulence or intestinal gas
  14. Halitosis or bad breath
  15. Impotence
  16. Infertility
  17. Insomnia
  18. Irritability
  19. Joint pains and swelling
  20. Low libido
  21. Muscle aches, weakness and paralysis
  22. Mood swings
  23. Rectal itching
  24. Skin conditions like athlete’s foot, fungal nail infections, eczema, psoriasis, scleroderma and systemic lupus
  25. Vaginal itching, burning and discharge

These symptoms are also associated with numerous other conditions which make diagnosing Candida infection quite challenging.

Factors which lead to an increase in the candida population include:

  1. Eating a diet rich in processed foods
  2. Drinking a lot of alcohol
  3. Taking antibiotics that kill the good bacteria in the intestines

Once the candida penetrates into the bloodstream, it triggers a cascade of infectious symptoms. It enters the blood stream by penetrating the protective mucosa lining within the intestines and throughout our bodies.

What is Candida?

Candida is a type of yeast which normally lives in the intestines in small amounts and aids the digestive process.

Julia Koehler, a Harvard University estimated that candida was responsible for around 60% of the fungal infections acquired in hospitals and it resulted in the deaths of every 1 out 3 infected persons. She reported that the fungus was dangerous because of its ability to change from a minor infection into a severe infection when the person developed low immunity.

Studies by Rice University reveal that around 70% of all people are affected by Candida. Research published in the Journal of the German Society of Dermatology found that Candida albicans was the species responsible for between 50 to 90% of all the candida infections (1).

Tests for Candida Overgrowth Yeast Infection

Candida infection can be tested by a blood test. This test checks for levels of antibodies to candida known as IgA, IgG and IgM. A Comprehensive Stool Test can also show positive Candida even when blood testing is negitive since the blood only checks for antibodies and not the actual yeast.  Further, a Urine Test that looks for the yeast waste product that is called D-arabinitol can determine the presence of Candida overgrowth if elevated results is positive.

Treatment of Candida Overgrowth Yeast Infection

Once the candida infection is confirmed and its severity assessed, the treatment of candida often includes a comprehensive plan that can include the following:

  1. Eliminating simple sugars like candy, deserts, chocolates, alcohol and flour from the diet since this fungi feeds on them.Candida Overgrowth Foods to Eliminate to Stop Feeding Bad Yeast - Naturlal Medicine Center Lakeland Central Florida
  2. Reducing the intake of complex carbohydrates like whole grains, beans, fruit, pasta and potatoes to further reduce the population of candida in the intestines.
  3. Taking caprylic acid supplements which are obtained from coconut oil as it helps kill the yeast cells.
  4. Taking probiotics to increase the concentration of the good bacteria in the gut and keep the candida in check.

You may read some herbalist recommending Oregano Oil.  We do no recommend this as it kills all yeast, even the good ones you need.

Be proactive in your health.  Heal your gut.  Eat whole raw vegetables to your heart’s desire.  Introduce foods known to fight Candia. Alkaline your diet.

Adrenal Fatigue – Chronic Stress Response

Adrenal fatigue is a collection of symptoms which develop when the adrenal glands are unable to function at their optimum level. Though it usually develops after periods of prolonged stress, adrenal fatigue can occur after severe infections.

Why does Adrenal Fatigue occur?

Everyone has stress in their life.  As humans we developed the natural Fight or Flight reaction to our environment long ago.  It’s base function is to kept us safe.  Although most people don’t encounter predators such as tigers and alligators – unless you are on a reality TV show, this Fight or Flight was the brain’s trigger to get out of harms way.

In today’s modern world stressors can come in many forms such as:

  • Getting the kids fed, dressed and off to school in time
  • The roadway traffic jams on our way to work
  • Balancing work and family life – shuffling kids to sports practice and the many other activities to keep our kids growing and engaged
  • Interpersonal relationship struggles be it marriage issues, extended family or at the office
  • Health concerns – Dealing with personal or family ill health, disease / cancer.  Losing a loved one (human or pet)
  • Financial concerns – loosing a job, taxes, buying a new car, having an accident, getting a traffic / speeding ticket, buy / selling / losing a home
  • Major life events such as getting married, getting divorced, buying / selling a home, new job or losing a job

Adrenal Fatigue Phases

The body’s stress response is characterized by the following three phases:

Phase 1 – Alarm Phase

This first phase of the body’s response to stress which is also known as the acute stress response, develops when the person encounters something that they perceive as a threat. The adrenal glands release stress hormones like adrenaline which prepares the person to fight or flee from the source of stress.

As a result of the secretion of adrenaline, the blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rate increase and the blood is shunted from the digestive system and taken to the muscles in the hands and legs.

This type of stress can be caused by everyday occurrences like arguments and traffic jams. After the person deals with the stressful situation the body recovers and the hormones that were elevated return to their normal levels within 30 minutes to 60 minutes.

Do You Want to Feel Better?

Phase 2 – Resistance Phase

This second phase develops when the person is exposed to continued stress–which forces the body to respond before it recovers completely from the first stressful event. The adrenal glands also respond by secreting stress hormones like cortisol.

The release of cortisol also results in elevated blood pressure and heart rate as well as craving carbohydrates to provide the body with a source of energy.

Other symptoms that may be experienced by patients in this phase include irritability, malaise, anxiety, depression, low libido, difficulty sleeping and concentrating.

Phase 3 – Exhaustion Phase

This third phase is also known as adrenal fatigue. Here, essentially, burnout develops because the person has been exposed to stress for a long time. The body loses its ability to cope with the stressful event since the adrenal glands cannot keep up with the signals sent by the nervous system to release hormones.

Symptoms associated with this stage include extreme fatigue and difficulties completing everyday activities. During this stage other body organs begin to suffer the effects of continued stress on the body. This results in the development or aggravation of stress related illnesses like high blood pressure, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases.

Homeopathic Dilutions

What does the "X" after a homeopathic ingredient mean?

The “X” refers to the level of concentration or dilution of the basic medicinal substance which was used to make the finished product. A basic medicinal substance may be a “Mother tincture” of a plant or animal or the mineral itself.

  • 1X means the dilution contains 1 part basic medicinal substance combined with 9 parts of diluent
  • 2X means the dilution contains 1 part of a 1X tincture with 9 parts diluent. So a 2X dilution is 1 part basic medicinal substance and 99 parts diluent or a 1 % extract, as shown below:
  • 1X: 1 part in 10 or 10%
  • 2X: 1 part in 100 or 1%
  • 3X: 1 part in 1,000 or 0.1%
  • 4X: 1 part in 10,000 or 0.01%… and so on.

What does the "MT" after a homeopathic ingredient mean?

  • “MT” means “Mother Tincture” (described above). Most Mother Tinctures are a 10% extract of the pure plant or animal and generally are designated as a 1X potency.
  • “MT(N)” means that the Mother Tincture for this ingredient in the product contained a 33% extract of the pure plant.
  • “MT(M)” means that the Mother Tincture for this ingredient in the product contained a 50% extract of the pure plant.

Catherine Onuoha
PhD, RPh, BCPP, CPh

Professional Thermographer and consultant pharmacist Dr. Catherine Onuoha was classically trained to appreciate Western Medical techniques at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV).  The PhD she earned at MCV is a dual discipline doctorate in Pharmacology and Toxicology.  After receiving her PhD, Dr. Onuoha pursued pursued a research position in the field of neuroscience at the Walter Reed Army Institute for Research (WRAIR).

Once her research at WRAIR was completed, Dr. Catherine found work in academia to be rewarding. Dr. Catherine held professorial posts for more than a decade, teaching within public and private institutions. Her teaching charge was to educate fledgling professionals across many medical specialties (Pharmacists, Nurses, Doctor of Orthopedics, Anesthetists, and Physician Assistants).

Throughout her academic years, Dr. Catherine dedicated some time each week to consultations with a patient base either within hospital clinics or in outpatient settings. Patient care continues to hold priority in Dr. Catherine’s work week. She is passionate about providing her patients compassionate, need-based medical care from a functional and natural healing perspective.

Although Dr. Catherine portends professorial work is meaningful, in fact, she loved it–a wee voice of intuition began working within her during 2014. To honor and trust this intuition, she began searching clinic work environments and was resolute in her quest to devote all of her time to patient care.

In January of 2015, Dr. Catherine joined Carol Chandler D.O.M. at the Natural Medicine Center of Lakeland. The two formed an easy collaboration since they share a similar vision of homeopathic healthcare in accordance with Natural and Alternative Healthcare methods.

Carol Chandler, D.O.M. and Dr. Catherine collaboratively have continued the tradition of utilizing Thermography as a powerful discovery tool to help clients far and near our community to achieve optimal health. Dr. Catherine is professionally trained to use Thermography as a unique tool to transduce physiologic changes. Dr. Catherine secondarily completed a rigorous training regimen under Dr. Carol Chandler a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and Master Herbalist.

Since April of 2015 Dr. Catherine has assumed responsibility for running the Natural Medicine Center of Lakeland and seeing patients here at this clinic.  While Dr. Catherine sees patients here at NMC and runs the day to day operations, she is assisted by her physician supervisor Doctor Justin Strittmatter who oversees medication/treatment decisions.

Nam Jeon Acupuncture Physician Holistic Healthcare Natural Medicine Center of Lakeland Central Florida

Nam Jeon, D.O.M.
Acupuncture Physician

Nam graduated from Midwest College of Oriental Medicine with Master’s degree. He is Korean and studied in China and has been practicing acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for twenty years, in the Midwest and Alaska before moving to Florida.

Nam is licensed in the State of Florida and certified by NCCAOM (the National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine).

He has been treating patients with complaints ranging from musculoskeletal pain (low back pain, sciatica, tennis elbow, bursitis, arthritis), neurological disorders (stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, headaches, migraines), and addiction (alcohol, drug, nicotine). He also teaches stress management and mindful meditation.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese Medicine can be utilized as an alternative for patients with chronic conditions, who do not respond to western methods, or cannot use drug therapies due to sensitivities. It is particularly beneficial to those patients with pain, who cannot undergo surgery or anesthesia.

The holistic approach of the Traditional Chinese Medicine is comprehensive, and assesses the individual patient as a “whole person”, instead of treating symptoms. The goal is to assess all contributing issues, that may affect the patient and their state of wellness, and to create a treatment plan to bring the mind, the body, and the spirit into harmony and balance once again.

Dr. Nam has also authored a number of books on acupuncture and Eastern medicine:

Do You Want to Feel Better?

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese medicine that has been practiced for centuries. It’s based on the theory that energy, called chi (say “chee”), flows through and around your body along pathways called meridians.

Acupuncture is a way to unblock or influence chi and help it flow back into balance.  Acupuncture is done by putting very thin needles into your skin at certain points on your body to influence the energy flow. Sometimes heat, pressure, or mild electrical current may be used along with needles.

What is Acupuncture used for?

People use acupuncture to relieve pain and to help manage certain health conditions. You can use it by itself or as part of a Western and Eastern Medicine  integrated healthcare treatment program. Studies have found promising results for the use of acupuncture for nausea and vomiting related to pregnancy, chemotherapy, and post-surgery pain. Acupuncture also may be useful for:

  • Stroke rehabilitation, which involves relearning skills that a person lost because of brain damage from a stroke.
  • Headache
  • Menstrual cramps (Dysmenorrhea)
  • Tennis elbow
  • Fibromyalgia, or widespread pain and tenderness of muscle and soft tissue.
  • Myofascial pain syndrome – caused by spasm in the muscles.
  • Low back pain. For people who have low back pain, acupuncture may help decrease pain and increase activity. Some studies show that acupuncture reduced pain and disability related to back problems more than usual treatment.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome – Pressure on a nerve in the wrist that results in tingling, numbness, weakness, or pain of the fingers and hand.
  • Asthma – Inflammation in the tubes that carry air to the lungs, resulting in periodic episodes of difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest tightness, and coughing.
  • Alcohol and Drug addiction recovery – Acupuncture may help reduce symptoms of withdrawal after a person stops taking a drug he or she is addicted to. It may also help prevent a relapse. More studies are needed to learn about the benefits of acupuncture.
  • Dental pain

Do You Want to Feel Better?

What Happens During an Acupuncture Treatment Session?

Your acupuncture physician will give you an exam and ask questions about your pain. For example your Acupuncture Physician may ask you how well you are functioning and also ask about your overall health.

After that, your physician will look for the places (called meridian points) on your body to access the chi that is blocked or not flowing right. Each of the points relates to certain health problems or body functions.

Your physician will look for landmarks on your body using certain muscles or bones, for example, to find the points so that he or she can place the needles.

After the physician finds the points, he or she will quickly tap very thin needles into your skin. He or she will probably place several needles. Some may be placed deeper than others, depending on what the provider believes is needed to restore the flow of chi.

Every physician is different, but in most cases treatment lasts for 15 minutes to an hour depending on your need. You may have several visits to reach your optimal health.  Some people have ongoing visits just as some have routine chiropractic visits.

What does it feel like?

You may feel slight pressure when a needle goes in. Most people find that it doesn’t hurt. The area may tingle, feel numb, itch, or be a little sore. Providers believe that this is a sign that the energy flow, or chi, has been accessed.

After the needle is placed, your provider may roll the needle slightly back and forth. Or he or she may use heat or electrical current on the needle.

Is acupuncture safe?

In general, acupuncture is safe when done by a certified provider. A state license ensures that the provider has a certain level of training and follows certain guidelines. But there are still a few states where acupuncture is not licensed.

In very rare cases, problems may occur after acupuncture. You could get an infection, especially if the needles aren’t sterile. At the Natural Medicine Center, our board certified Acupuncture Physicians use new sterile needles with each patient and follows the best practice of using alcohol to clean the insertion area both before and after the treatment.

Acupuncture Point Injection Therapy

Acupuncture Point Injection Therapy involves the injection of small amounts of saline solution administered by qualified acupuncturists. Like acupuncture, fine needles are inserted into acupuncture points or trigger points just under the skin or into muscles.  As the name suggests, this therapy evolved from acupuncture and has long been a therapy used by acupuncturists in China and around the world.

Acupoint Injection is a specialized acupuncture treatment.

It works in several ways. The injection of saline into acupuncture points activates them in a similar way to the insertion of acupuncture needles. The major difference being, the bonus of saline water can activate the acupuncture point for a longer period of time enhancing the therapeutic effect.  If needed saline dissolved vitamins or herbal remedies may be used to benefit the healing process.

Saline solution is an isotonic solution containing the same salt concentrations as our cells, blood and interstitial fluid (the fluid between our cells). In cases of chronic illness or acute injury the interstitial fluid may become congested with the waste products of inflammation from injured tissue, preventing the efficient nutrient and waste product transfer between the cells and the bloodstream. The injection of saline may improve the quality of the interstitial fluid allowing nutrient and waste product transfer between the cells and bloodstream to occur efficiently again. Saline, being pH neutral, may have its own particular effects on alkalizing local connective tissues, and possibly optimizing conditions for the body’s self-healing mechanisms.

Acupuncture point injection therapy does not simply suppress or mask pain, but rather prompts the body to treat the cause of the pain via self-healing mechanisms.

What is the Meridian System?

Chinese medicine believes there is a distribution network for the fundamental substances of Qi (pronounced chee), Blood and Body Fluids  throughout the body. (These fundamental substances are different from the common western understandings of these terms, and their concepts are important for maintaining health using Traditional Chinese Medicine – TCM.) This distribution network called the Meridian System looks like a giant web, linking different areas of our body together. Its pathways make up a comprehensive yet complex body map that supplies vital energy to every part of the body. Philosophically, the Meridian System explains how we live, and why we become sick.

The Chinese meaning of the word Meridian

Jing luo“, the Chinese term for meridian has two interesting concepts which make up the basic structural components of the Meridian System. These concepts date back several thousand years and are reflected in the ancient Chinese medical text, Huang Di Nei Jing (The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine), which says: Jing meridians act as the interior. Those which branch off horizontally are luo meridians.Jing means to pass through or pathway and refers to the vertical channels. Luo means network and refers to the networks that branch off from the vertical channels (Jing). Both Jing and Luo mean link or connection, and they are bound closely together to form channels.

Meridians are not blood vessels

Although meridians work as a channel system which carries and distributes qi and blood, they are not blood vessels and have no anatomical channel structure. Many meridian research projects have been carried out over the years testing different hypotheses of how this system works. Physiological hypotheses such as nervous reflex models have been put forward, but researchers have not yet come up with a definitive model that can give a complete anatomical description of the Meridian System.

Meridians are a collection of acupuncture points

By connecting and uniting different parts of our body, meridians provide the transport service for the fundamental substances of qi, blood, and body fluids. The flow of qi in the Meridian System concentrates or “injects” in certain areas of the skin’s surface. These areas are very small points, otherwise known as “acupuncture points”. Although acupuncture points are located externally and superficially, they can affect the internal functions of our body. There are 365 acupuncture points, and each point belongs to a particular meridian channel that connects to specific organs.

Classification of Meridians

The Meridian System has 12 principal meridians that correspond to the yin and yang organs and the pericardium. (Yin organs are usually those without an empty cavity, and include the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys. Yang organs are organs with an empty cavity such as the gall bladder, small intestine, stomach, large intestine and bladder. In TCM, yin and yang organs are physiological functional units that incorporate a much broader meaning then common western thinking.) Meridians linked with yin organs are known as yin meridians; if they are linked to yang organs, they are known as yang meridians. In addition to the 12 principal meridians, there are eight extra meridians and smaller network-like luo meridians. Among the eight extra meridians, the  Governing Vessel and the Conception Vessel are considered the most important channels, because they contain acupuncture points which are independent of the twelve principal meridians
